We all are born to speak our unique mother tongue and can speak it naturally, fluently, and effectively. However; to survive the modern world, we have to gear ourselves with at least one more language, and it is always English that we are mesmerized in pursuing.

With only twenty-six letters, English magically produces a powerful and useful worldwide language making it a lingua franca. Hence, many native speakers are to teach English over the Internet boasting their so-called effective and quick skills.

Oddly enough, we are not hard to hear many who teach English saying we can ignore learning grammar when we learn spoken English. They even use slogans and propaganda publicizing ‘Don’t learn grammar’ to canvass. Some others tell us it is time-consuming to make an effort to study pronunciation and delve into vocabulary. They emphasize that if you can successfully communicate with people, it is good English, and ‘confidence’ is the crux. I wonder where confidence comes from when one lacks the abovementioned skills when confidence consists in ability.

Don’t study grammar; don’t care how you pronounce; never mind if you have used vocabulary; what you have to do is to communicate successfully. I wonder without being able to exercise the proficient skill to speak with proper grammar, correct vocabulary, and precise pronunciation by learning them hard, how can we communicate successfully? It seems nothing short of a commercial gimmick in addition to not wanting non-native speakers to speak in authentic good English.

When learning a language outside of our mother tongue, we must first respect such a language by making an effort to learn its rules as a foundation. The basic rules of grammar are indispensable in learning English so that we can build up a concrete foundation to use decently and gracefully when we talk with foreigners. Pronunciation plays no less important role than grammar, and vocabulary will reveal the standard and mania of your English.

I am not a stickler, but I feel compelled to tell you the truth that only when acquiring the concrete foundation of grammar, the proficiency of pronunciation, and the expanse of vocabulary can you have the real ‘confidence’ to speak to foreigners without fear of making mistakes and making a fool of yourself. Remember that real confidence comes from ability – ability first and then confidence.
