“Sarah, a little girl, without choice, witnesses her father unluckily contract a deadly illness and going to leave her. The whole book talks a lot about ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), the worst kind of neurological disorder disease, letting us gain not a little knowledge about it when most of us won’t have much of it. May I avail myself of this opportunity to thank Sarah for doing a great job here for us? ALS is an extremely insidious disease that can attack anyone without mercy leaving his or her family and loved ones helpless and extremely hopeless.
Nevertheless, what Sarah in the book tells us is we can still do a lot only if there is love serves as a reason. In the book, we can witness how Sarah at the age of sixteen faces the brutal reality of admitting her father being diagnosed with ALS and dealing with her emotion changing by watching him get worse and worse day by day horribly and ruthlessly. It is impressive to see how Sarah goes from total denial to acceptance with tears and struggles, how the dark moments in her juvenile stage of life forcibly turned her into a mature person, and at last, how those dark moments awesomely turned into moments of growth as a result.
In the book, Sarah not only teaches us about the knowledge of ALS but also offers us not a little interesting preaching about life, and I would like to quote some here. Hump Day is Wednesday; three ‘sorries’ can only be enough seen as a real sorry; be careful what you wish for (I like it most); new normal (we always see it as abnormal); five stages of grief (everyone will go through); everything does not happen for a reason (sarcastic enough); and she has, many times, made a point of reciting her father’s maxim for life to alert herself and us, it is ‘be happy, be nice and keep trekking’. Besides these, Ice Bucket Challenge is mentioned as a reminder of the ALS disease in the book as well. Surely, we should never forget this sensational activity that once united the world.
Sarah, you may not know how much I want to tell you my dad died of another fatal illness in the same year as your dad did, and coincidentally, I have written him a memoir talking about how he confronts the illness with us accompanying him alongside. The difference is my dad could not in his life get as much love as your dad did, turning out to be my life regret that nothing can atone to. Sarah, you are amazing to have all along loved your dad and not everyone can do so as you! I would like to recommend the book to everyone!”
Confronting a loved one’s serious illness can be an excruciating experience. However, it can also be a moment of growth, one that transcends mere aging and strengthens our character.
