Without further ado, let me summarize why I believe this book is worth your time, money, and ownership. Let’s get into some brief details of it first.
Name of the book: The Railway Man
Name of the author: Eric Lomax
The genre of the book: Prisoners of war history
After reading the book, I have written a review where I share my thoughts and provide some analysis of the content. By sharing my impressions, I aim to spark your interest and fuel your enthusiasm to explore the journey of prisoners of war history. I cannot wait to present my review for your consideration now.

“It is expected that soldiers like Lomax are physically and mentally strong. Therefore, it is surprising to see him describe the torture he endured in a manner that seemed like he was bemoaning. A soldier’s attitude is not typically characterized by excessive agony or sadness. The book failed to evoke the intended emotions in me as Lomax’s descriptions of his tortured experience read like a reporter’s account, lacking the necessary emotional depth.

While I was prepared to read about the cruelty and inhumanity of Lomax’s torture at the hands of his captors, I was caught off guard by another episode that I did not expect. When Lomax recounted his sadness and pain after surviving the torture, being released, and returning home to learn of his mother’s death due to heartbreak, I found myself deeply moved. Lomax was sure that his mother might have thought he was dead after hearing the news of the fall of Singapore and his reported missing status. This was the first time I could sense Lomax’s emotional collapse. On a page he recalled his mother’s face in his mind with words written as “seeing her stand in a crowd on a dark street in Scarborough seeing him off”, sighed this was the last time he saw her, adding there were things about his plight in the war he could have told her that proved hard to share with any others. A vivid image of Lomax’s tattered face immediately appeared on my mind, and I was unable to stop my tears from rolling down. It was clear that this was a severe blow to him.

The second blow came when he learned that his father had remarried soon after his mother’s death. He was deeply hurt and decided never to see him again. To me, the impact of these events was more brutal than all the tortures he suffered during the war. It is much more hurtful and hateful when we are hurt by our families than by others.

I am the type of person who likes to delve deeper. I assume that if Lomax’s mother had not died, and he had returned home to a complete family and love, he would not have spent the rest of his life hysterically remembering the person who had tortured him during the war in a way that he could never forgive. As a spy, Lomax should know that torture was a possibility. It does not make enough sense that he would hold such a grudge against his torturer to such an extent that he would sacrifice most of his life to live in pain, unable to find happiness. I have a feeling that he behaved this way to vent his personal anger and misfortune on his torturer as compensation or distraction for the loss of his mother, which was his most precious possession in life.

The book is rich in detail in every way. I particularly appreciated its sentimental aspects. I think I would have enjoyed the book even more if I were interested in mechanics. There are a lot of fascinating details described in the mechanics of the old-style train that can feed the hunger of a mechanic maniac to the utmost.”

The book takes you on a journey of war, spy, torture, and imprisonment with fascinating details of the old-style trains as a comfort. Forgiveness serves as an important aspect in the book that urges us to do so the earliest The afterward movie adaptation of the book features renowned actors in the lead roles, which may spark your interest in reading the entire book.
